Job Overview: Chief Financial Officer
The Baltimore Civic Fund strives to serve as a hub for connection
and coordination between the City of Baltimore and the
philanthropic community by building relationships and growing
support for priority projects. Working alongside the Mayor of
Baltimore and City leadership, the Civic Fund helps realize a
vision of an inclusive city where all Baltimore residents
prosper.
As the fiscal sponsor for the City of Baltimore, the Baltimore
Civic Fund serves as the financial backbone for public-private
partnerships between innovative City programs and the philanthropic
community. In this role, the Civic Fund manages over $20 million
annually for more than 100 City programs that promote business and
economic development, education, culture and the creative economy,
job growth, and more.
Our services allow City agencies to raise funds and accept
philanthropic investments, while providing the assurance to
investors that contributions are managed with the highest level of
integrity and accuracy.
We are looking for an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to
oversee our organization's finances and general business
operations. The Civic Fund is undergoing a strategic planning
process to consider expanding its scope of services, which may
impact the volume and complexity of its financial needs. As we
continue to grow, we seek a dedicated and strategic CFO to lead our
financial operations and ensure the organization's financial health
and sustainability.
The CFO role is a key member of the senior management team,
reporting only to the President and CEO. This position maintains
management of diverse financial and business operations, which
requires an experienced and efficient leader with excellent people
skills, business acumen and exemplary work ethic.
Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
Develop and execute financial strategies that support the mission
and growth of the organization.
Partner with the CEO and Board of Directors to set financial goals
and long-term strategic plans.
Provide financial insights and recommendations to enhance
organizational effectiveness and sustainability.
Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting to ensure
resources are aligned with organizational priorities.
Prepare and present regular financial reports to the Board of
Directors, highlighting key financial metrics, trends, and
risks.
Ensure the Board and CEO are well-informed on financial performance
and potential challenges.
Support Board of Directors Investment Committee on management of
the Civic Fund's investment portfolio.
Financial Management & Operations
Manage day-to-day financial operations, including accounting,
payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and cash flow management.
Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and
reports for internal stakeholders and the Board of Directors.
Implement and maintain financial controls to ensure compliance with
regulations, policies, and best practices.
Coordinate the annual audit and tax filing processes, working with
external auditors.
Oversee the financial aspects of the Civic Fund's programmatic
grants and fundraising activities, ensuring proper budgeting,
reporting, and compliance with funder requirements.
Risk Management & Compliance
Ensure the organization complies with all local, state, and federal
regulations, as well as internal policies related to financial
management.
Identify and mitigate financial risks that could impact the
organization's sustainability.
Ensure timely and accurate tax filings and compliance with
nonprofit financial regulations.
Team Leadership & Development
Directly manage small finance team.
Lead, mentor, and develop the Director of Finance and Staff
Accountant to foster a high-performance environment and ensure
efficient fiscal management and operations.
Provide training and support for staff on financial policies and
procedures.
Qualifications
CPA or MBA required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration,
or related field
Minimum of 8 years of experience in financial management, with at
least 5 years in a leadership role within a nonprofit or small
organization.
Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, tax laws, and
financial regulations.
Experience with financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
Proven ability to manage financial reporting and compliance with
external audits.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex financial information
to non-financial stakeholders.
Strong organizational and project management skills, with the
ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite
(experience with Sage Intacct preferred).
