Job Description:

ASTTBC Registered Fire Protection Technicians (RFPT) test and inspect the following fire and life safety systems:

  • Generators systems (GS)Currently there are 23 jurisdictions in the province of BC that require a RFPT to inspect and test the fire and life safety systems in buildings. To legally perform work in these jurisdictions you must be registered with ASTTBC as a RFPT in the appropriate endorsement.

    To become registered in these endorsements, you must complete specific courses and obtain the progressive and minimum experience in the endorsement area. The most common endorsements are Portable Fire Extinguishers (EX), Unit Emergency Lighting Systems (EM), Fire Alarm Systems (AL), and Water-Based Systems (WA).

    RFPT registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Registered Onsite Wastewater PractitionerASTTBC Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioners (ROWP) perform maintenance, inspection, design, and installation of onsite wastewater systems. BC Ministry of Health's -Sewerage System Regulation (SSR) stipulates that only Authorized Persons (or an owner supervised by an Authorized Person) may construct or maintain onsite sewage treatment and dispersal systems.

    The scope of practice for ROWPs is defined by four endorsements: Planner; Installer; Maintenance Provider; and Private Inspector. A ROWPs must be registered with one or more endorsements.
    • ROWP Planners are responsible for the assessment of site and soil conditions, system design, construction review, and certification of system construction. Individuals that are registered as a Planner are also permitted to perform private inspections without the requirement of the Private Inspector endorsement.
    • ROWP Installers are responsible for the physical installation and repair of onsite wastewater systems in accordance with specifications provided by a ROWP Planner or a Professional as defined in the Sewerage System Regulation.
    • ROWP Maintenance Providers are responsible for the maintenance of onsite wastewater systems in accordance with the maintenance plan provided by a ROWP Planner or a Professional. Individuals that are registered as a Maintenance Providers are also permitted to perform private inspections without the requirement of the Private Inspector endorsement.
    • ROWP Private Inspectors are responsible for the assessment of existing systems - typically to support real estate transactions or building permit applications. ROWP Private Inspectors-Residential (PIR) inspect sewerage systems on residential properties whereas ROWP Private Inspectors-Commercial (PIC) inspect sewerage systems on commercial properties. Individuals that are registered as a Planner or Maintenance Provider are also permitted to perform private inspections without the requirement of the Private Inspector endorsements.ROWP registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Certified House InspectorASTTBC Certified House Inspectors (CHI) perform standard house inspections that may be required by prospective house purchasers (clients). House inspection involves visual inspection, limited testing, collection of information, and reporting of results to provide the client with an objective description of the condition of the property.CHIs represent the next highest level of certification (under Certified Property Inspectors), meeting registration requirements to inspect condo units and single-family residences.

      CHI registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Certified Property InspectorASTTBC Certified Property Inspectors (CPI) are qualified and experienced in property inspection and preparing informative reports for clients. They meet all property inspection qualifications and registration requirements based on applied science technology qualifications, as well as demonstrate experience and competency in the field of house and property inspection. ASTTBC registrants with this designation may do house inspections, but they are also certified to carry out various types of commercial property inspections.

      CPIs represent the highest level of certification, meeting registration requirements for training and experience in condominiums, single-family residences and entire buildings. Inspectors with the CPI designation are also required to be registered as AScTs or CTechs.

      CPI registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Registered Reserve Fund AnalystASTTBC Registered Reserve Fund Analysts (RRFA) specialize in the preparation of reserve fund plans for various types of real estate as well as specifically addressing the requirements for Strata Depreciation Reporting. This includes inspecting, analyzing and reporting on strata properties.

      RRFA registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Construction Safety OfficerASTTBC Construction Safety Officers (CSO) are responsible for worker and public safety around construction sites. They understand and apply safe construction, installation or demolition techniques as applicable, respecting the supply, installation or use of materials at a construction site and their relationship to the worksite, neighboring property, public utilities, and the public.CSO registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Registered Construction Safety OfficerASTTBC Registered Construction Safety Officers (RCSO) are registered as practising CSOs who are responsible for worker and public safety around construction sites. They understand and apply safe construction, installation or demolition techniques as applicable, respecting the supply, installation or use of materials at a construction site and their relationship to the worksite, neighboring property, public utilities, and the public.

      RCSO registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Certified Public Works InspectorASTTBC Certified Public Works Inspectors (CPWI) work with municipal, provincial and federal governments, contractors, consulting engineering firms and inspection companies, and offer services ranging from entry-level (involving inspection and testing) to more advanced levels of responsibility, including taking direct control of public works projects. They apply applicable standards, provincial and municipal bylaws, regulations and specifications for infrastructure construction projects.

      CPWI registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Registered Public Works TechnicianASTTBC Registered Public Works Technicians (RPWT) apply applicable standards, provincial and municipal bylaws, regulations and specifications for various public works operational departments and functions.

      RPWT registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Registered In Site Improvements SurveyorASTTBC Registered In Site Improvements Surveyors (RSIS) determine the relative location of structures to cadastral survey monuments and Land Title and Survey Authority records and plans. The surveys they produce are typically required by lending institutions as a condition of mortgage approval, and by municipal authorities - as part of the building permit process - for the location and related ancillary works prior to construction.

      RSIS registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Registered Steel DetailerASTTBC Registered Steel Detailers (RSD) are specialized technicians who make detailed shop or fabrication drawings that steel fabricators or welders use to manufacture girders, beams, columns, stairways, and other steel components of buildings and structures.RSD registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Certified Steel DetailerASTTBC Certified Steel Detailers (CSD) are specialized technicians who make detailed shop or fabrication drawings that steel fabricators or welders use to manufacture girders, beams, columns, stairways, and other steel components of buildings and structures.CSD registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Registered Building DesignerASTTBC Registered Building Designers (RBD) are professional building designers regulated by ASTTBC. In the public interest, they work with architects, professional engineers, ASTTBC registrants, and other professionals. Registration as an AScT or CTech is required before one may be registered as a RBD. -

      RBD have expertise in a broad spectrum of building types including:
      • Residential: single- or multi-family
      • Commercial: offices and retail spaces
      • Industrial/light manufacturingRBD registration requirements can be found in the ASTTBC Bylaws.Certified Residential DesignerASTTBC Certified Residential Designers (CRD) are professional building designers regulated by ASTTBC. In the public interest, they work with architects, professional engineers, ASTTBC registrants and other professionals. Registration as an AScT or CTech is required before one may be registered as a CRD. -

        CRD have expertise in a limited spectrum of building types including:
